EUSR Category 5 – Install, Inspect & Remove Proprietary Shoring Systems

Overview

The EUSR Category 5 Deep Excavation Course provides learners with essential theoretical and practical knowledge about the dangers associated with excavation work. Participants will explore key topics such as HSE guidance documents HSG150 and HSG47, as well as the Construction Industry Research and Information Association’s reports. The course emphasises the importance of identifying various ground conditions and teaches a range of methods for employing appropriate ground retention systems. It includes practical training and assessments for installing ground support systems in a live dig environment, focusing on specific temporary work designs. This comprehensive training prepares individuals to install, inspect, and remove proprietary excavation support systems while understanding the associated risks and hazards. Ultimately, this course equips participants with the necessary skills and knowledge for safe and effective deep excavation practices, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and safety standards.

Course Objectives

Classroom-based theory will cover:

  • Legislation
  • Health and safety requirements
  • Different shoring systems
  • Choosing the correct system
  • Soil conditions
  • Angle of repose
  • The effects of weather/water
  • Service drawings.

Practical activities include:

  • The installation of shallow trench (small hydraulic frame and MAP Box)
  • Installation of small shaft braces
  • The correct use of CAT and use of drawings for cable location
  • Push and dig exercise
  • The installation of a trench box
  • The installation of a slit trench.

Assessment

The EUSR Category 5 course employs a combination of theoretical instruction and practical demonstrations to enhance learning outcomes, with assessments conducted to validate participants’ understanding and competence in deep excavation safety practices. Throughout the course, there will be ongoing observation and assessment by the tutor to ensure participants are meeting the required standards. Additionally, at the end of day two, participants will be required to complete a short written test to assess their understanding of the material covered.

This EUSR Category 5 course is essential for managers, supervisors, safety professionals, and operatives who need to oversee or perform work in or around excavations. If you are involved in the physical installation, inspection, or removal of shoring systems and have not received any formal training, completing this course is crucial to minimize risks for yourself and those around you. All operatives, supervisors, and managers beginning excavation work must adhere to the relevant sections of HSE guidance HSG47, HSG150, CIRIA Trenching Practice, and other applicable requirements, and follow the recommendations outlined in these documents. This course aligns with this guidance and provides you with the practical knowledge necessary for your role.

Entry Requirements

Participants should have a reasonable level of mobility and the ability to lift and move loads. Additionally, a good understanding of spoken and written English is required. If you have any concerns regarding your English language skills, please do not hesitate to contact us. As part of the general site requirements, delegates are expected to wear gloves, safety footwear, a high-visibility jacket, a safety helmet, and waterproof clothing.

Additional Information

Upon successful completion, participants will receive certification in EUSR Category 5 Deep Excavation, which is recognised in the industry and accredited by EUSR.

Upon a successful completion you will gain the knowledge of:

Identify the dangers and hazards associated with working in excavations
Differentiate between soil types and conditions
Recognise suitable ground retention systems
Carry out risk assessments unique to excavations
Recognise the hazards, and implement control measures for those hazards
Understand current legislation, policies and procedures associated with safety in excavations
Be able to safely install, remove and inspect proprietary shoring equipment and gain practical experience in doing so
Interpret specific temporary work designs

Course content

Upon successfully completing the course you will be awarded a certificate.

Your days will include a 15 minute break in the morning and afternoon, you will also be allowed a 30 minute break for lunch.

Ensure your bring your OWN lunch, or alternatively lunch can be provided at £5 a head.

You must bring or know your national insurance number.

You will need to bring full PPE.
